#49 - Slave

I stared out over the choppy waves.

Perhaps a mile away a large galley was waiting, its small sails reefed and oars shipped. My breath caught in my throat as I looked at the pennants fluttering in the stiff breeze.

Slavers...

A standalone fantasy story featuring the otter Tark and his human partner Guthry. When the Red Hand slavers finally catch up with them, Guthry is captured. It's up to Tark to try and mount a daring rescue, but what can one otter do against an entire crew?

As part of my worldbuilding for Claws of the Chimera, the book I'm working on, I wanted to flesh out the Lutran Confederacy. Almost all the western ports in Meria are occupied by the Confederacy. Piracy is a common risk, and most otters and humans who live in the ports fall into two categories: Those willing to sell their services, and those trying to make their way through criminal means. Tark and Guthry fall into the latter category for sure.

As always, I would love to collaborate with you! If you have short fiction that you would like me to include as a standalone episode of Pocket Fiction, drop me a line!

Each track is also available as a podcast through the iTunes store.
